MOLES
A mole, also known as a nevus, is a benign growth on the skin that forms when melanocytes, or pigment-producing cells, grow in clusters. Moles can be flesh-colored or dark, raised or flat, and come in many different shapes and sizes. They can slowly enlarge as a person grows, but may also change during times of hormonal fluctuation, such as pregnancy. While moles are usually not cancerous, some people have an increased risk of developing melanoma from their moles, especially if they were born with large moles, also known as congenital nevi.
SKIN CYSTS
A skin cyst is an abnormal, usually noncancerous growth filled with liquid or a semisolid substance, sometimes causing pain. A cyst may need to be removed if it’s causing pain, discomfort, or confidence issues.
LIPOMAS
A skin lipoma is a noncancerous (benign) lump of fatty tissue that develops in the fatty layer of the skin, usually between the skin and muscle. Lipomas are fairly common, affecting around 1% of people, and are often detected in middle age. They can grow anywhere in the body with fat cells, but are most common in the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, and thighs. While most people don’t need treatment for a lipoma, surgical removal may be necessary if it’s bothersome.
